Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra visits his aunt’s place every year in his majestic chariot with a lot of pomp and show which starts from the Jagannath Temple Puri. It is famously known as ‘Jagannath Rath Yatra‘, which is followed by millions of pilgrims all over the world. Jagannath temple Puri is known as the Shreekhetra Dham of India and prime of all Jagannath temples in India Jagannath rath yatra is celebrated on the ‘Dwitiya’ (2nd day) during the ‘Ashadha Shukla Paksha’ (the waxing phases of moon in the Ashadha month of the Hindu calendar).

Rituals Of The Famous Car Festival (Rath Yatra 2018)

On 2018, from the main sanctum-sanctorum of Jagannath temple Puri, the Chariot will be pulled on 14th July 2018 on the special occasion of Jagannath rath yatra. The tithi, for this day, is-
Dwitiya Tithi Begins = 09:02 on 14/Jul/2018
Dwitiya Tithi Ends = 05:25 on 15/Jul/2018
Rajendrabhisekha – 23.07.2018: Grand Coronation (abhisekha) of the Lord of the Universe – The Mahabprabhu.
Rukmaniharan Ekadashi– During Jagannath rath yatra, Rukmaniharan Ekadashi will be celebrated on 24.07.2018: Jagannath rath yatra was the day when Lord Krishna had kidnapped the beautiful Rukmani.
Champaka Dwadashi– Champaka Dwadashi would observe on 25.07.2018 in Jagannath temple. Jagannath rath yatra is observed on 12th day of bright fortnight of Jyestha month. Special puja and bhog are offered to Lord Jagannath on this day in the premises of Jagannath Temple.
Daitapai Prabesha & Charabandha – During Jagannath rath yatra, Daitapai Prabesha & Charabandha will fall on 26.07.2018
Chhaturdashi Senapata Lagi – In Jagannath Temple Puri, the ritual will be conducted on 27.07.2018
Debasnana Purnima – On the occasion of Jagannath rath yatra, Debasnana Purnima will fall on 28.07.2018
Rath Yatra
Jagannath rath yatra is famously known as Snana Purnima. Lord Jagannath along with his brother and sister are taken to the banks of a pond from the complex of Jagannath Temple Puri known as ‘Snana mandapa’. He is made to have a bath with 108 vessels of water taken from the pond.
Dashami Chaka Bije  29.07.2018: Puja after the final wheel of the chariot is prepared to perform some other rituals and traditional rites of Jagannath rath yatra.

Rath Yatra
After the holy Snana Purnima, Lord Jagannath is said to catch cold and fever for duration of 15 days. He is made to have homemade medicines and all the time takes rest in his cot. No devotees are allowed to visit the Lord in the Jagannath temple during these 15 days. After the completion of the 15 days when devotees are allowed to see Lord Jagannath in his favourite abode- Jagannath temple Puri it is known as Netroutsava.

‘Hera’ means to ‘see’ and ‘Panchami’ means the ‘fifth day’. Jagannath rath yatra is celebrated at Gundicha temple on the fifth day from the start date of the Car festival- Jagannath rath yatra. After they return, the chariots are kept in front of the Puri – Jagannath temple Puri while preparations are made for a royal look of the Gods. “Suna Besa” is the form Lord Jagannath takes up along with his brother and sister. In this ritual of Jagannath rath yatra in Jagannath temple they are mounted with huge amounts of Gold jewelry and clothes made of Gold. Then comes’ the very significant Niladri Bije. This is really interesting as it is all about the continuation of the fight between Lord Jagannath and Goddess Laxmi. Lord Balabhadra and Subhadra enter the temple after they return from the vacation but Lord Jagannath is not allowed to enter the temple. A fight happens between Lord Jagannath and Laxmi in front of the temple for a long temple. Goddess Laxmi allows him to enter only after he offered her ‘Rasgulas’ – an Oriya sweet made of curd cheese.
Here ends the enormous car festival of the Gods. The Rath Yatra at Puri is a significant event in the entire state that is witnessed by numerous tourists both foreigners and Indians.
