The great king Dasaratha of Ayodhya had three wives – Kaushalya, Sumithra and Kaikeyi. He could not obtain any child so Rishi Vashishta suggested to perform putra kamesti Yagna. Hence, after a few months on the ninth day of Navami Kaushalya gave birth to Lord Ram. His coming to the earth made all the devtas and apsaras drop flowers on the baby. He had come for a reason and not for only some years but for generations to come.

Rituals of Ram Navami
